As of April 2023, the NCLEX has introduced new question types, one of them including the Trend item.
On the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN), this item assesses a test-taker’s knowledge of the NCJMM (NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model). The NCJMM is a set of steps used to evaluate clinical judgment.
Trend items may be presented in a variety of formats, such as graphs, charts, or tables, and may include information such as vital signs, lab results, or other clinical data. The test-taker may be asked to identify changes in the data, such as a gradual increase or decrease in a particular value, or sudden changes that may indicate a worsening condition.
What’s a Trend Item?
A Trend item is a type of question that requires the test-taker to review a series of patient data or clinical findings over a period of time and identify any trends or changes that may require further intervention.
This type of question assesses the test-taker’s ability to analyze and interpret patient data and make clinical judgments based on the findings.
How to Answer a Trend Question on the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN)
Answering a Trend item on the NGN required test-takers to carefully review the provided patient data and analyze it carefully. You need to compare the data over time, calculate changes or percentages, and make clinical judgments based on their findings.
It’s important to note that Trend items may also incorporate other types of NGN questions, such as Multiple Choice or Select All That Apply.
